OVERVIEW

Mike: My wife is from the former Yugoslavia, where they use the phrase “Da” for “yes” So the opening to ‘My Girl 2’, with everyone shouting “Oui oui, si si, ja ja, da da!” is some chap being very enthusiastic about his girlfriend, so enthusiastic that he’s saying “yes, yes, yes, yes” all the time. The first ‘My Girl’ was about my relationship with my old girlfriend, Kerstin. And ‘My Girl 2’ is about the early days of my relationship with my new partner, who is now my wife. Relationships go through different phases. I wrote ‘Sugar And Spice’ off The Liberty Of Norton Folgate at the end of a relationship, and ‘Black and Blue’ off this album was also about the end of that same relationship. But this song was positive – about that period when you’ve just met somebody, before you discover how horrible both of you are (laughs]. We recorded it originally with Clive, and that’s the version at the end of the record, and that’s very much how I wrote it originally. Then Chris came up with this idea to change the rhythm of it.
