LYRICS

Set me free, why don’t you, babe?
Get out my life, why don’t you, babe?
‘Cause you don’t really need me
You just keep me hanging on

Set me free, why don’t you, babe?
Get out my life, why don’t you, babe?
‘Cause you don’t really love me
You just keep me hanging on

Why do you keep coming around
Playing with my heart?
Why don’t you get out of my life
And let me make a brand new start?
Let me get over you
The way you’ve gotten over me, yeah

Set me free, why don’t you, babe?
Get out my life, why don’t you, babe?
‘Cause you don’t really need me
You just keep me hanging on

Set me free, why don’t you, babe?
Get out my life, why don’t you, babe?
‘Cause you don’t really love me
You just keep me hanging on

Why don’t you be a woman about it
And set me free?
‘Cause you don’t care a thing about me
You’re just using me

Set me free, set me free
Just set me free, baby
Set me free, just set me free
Just set me free, baby
Set me free, set me free
Just set me free, baby
Set me free, just set me free
Just set me free, baby

OVERVIEW

Mark: People always say, I remember where I was and what I was doing, when I first heard that song. For me, *You Keep Me Hanging On’, by The Supremes, is just one of those songs. 1967. Sitting in the kitchen, eating porridge, getting ready to be taken to school. Tony Blackburn on the Breakfast Show. It must have sunk in. Of course, I didn’t know what the ‘fabulous sound of Motown’ was. But everyday he seemed to play a big, new song that boomed out of the tiny radio. It wasn’t The Beatles. At seven years old you could just about understand, ‘I wanna hold your hand. But ‘get out my life, why don’t you babe’? A bit overwhelming. By its sheer force, the song, down the years, has urged you to make a connection with it. So it’s no surprise that we have come back to this song again. To play it this time to just playplay it, while remembering when you first heard it. And to do it justice? That is another matter and maybe not the idea.
